Boston's Back Bay

Once a tidal area in the Charles River Bay estuary, Boston's Back Bay was filled in during the 19th-century to create more land in the city of Boston. In 1857, the Back Bay filling project began and Commonwealth Avenue was created. The Back Bay project continued up until 1862, eventually doubling the size of the area's original land. Once the filling project was complete, three- and four-story Victorian residential brownstones were built, creating a stunning, 19th-century historic district, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one on the most exclusive neighborhoods in Boston.
